final fantasy xiii trilogy is so weird because the quality of the gameplay sky rockets the farther you go and they become an absolute blast to play but they just straight up stopped caring about the story that every sequel they completely retconned the game preceding it
XIII-2 straight up starts with “the ending to XIII-1 didnt happen”
Lightning Returns introduces a brand new deity that was never mentioned in the prior two games to skirt around the fact XIII-2′s cliffhanger left literally no room for moving forward without it. This is my favorite game. I hate it.
xiii: standard narrative about rising above oppression and taking down malevolent benefactors
xiii-2: the in universe grim reaper felt sad so the entire universe got fucked up and you gotta fix it (you fail)
lightning returns: *god comes in* oh my god i was away for like 5 minutes what the fuck happened. i’m gonna hit the reset button on this shit and whoever doesn’t love me enough can get fucked
